balance-1-1564308Many people in the heart-centered business community take time to balance our lives with practices like yoga and meditation. We understand that the breath has much to teach us… but business advice from our breathing? Read on to understand what I’m getting at here.

Most, if not all Holistic Business Owners are very clear about at least this — we want to help. We want to do good in the world and make a positive difference in our communities, for our clients, or for the world. This is a genuine drive among an ever-increasing percentage of the population, and it’s a very good thing indeed!

On A Mission

But because money is such a big bugaboo, those of us who have a mission to serve like to imagine that what we do is not about the money. And so we say things like, “I do this for the love of it; I don’t care about the money.” Or, “I don’t want to get rich or anything, I just need enough to get by.”

In one sense this is absolutely true. Those of us high enough on Maslow’s scale of needs to actually heed the call of our Soul Purpose work in the world, genuinely want to do our good work for the benefit of all. It’s not about the money, it’s about the service.

In It To Win It

The problem is, if we cling to the belief that it’s not about the money, without grounding our service in the market economy in which we live, we can easily spiral downward into giving without receiving — giving from an empty vessel.

There’s no win in this kind of giving, because there is no equal exchange of energy. It’s like exhaling repeatedly without every inhaling. It just doesn’t make sense. The results are predictable:

• Cycles of burn-out

• Very few people actually served

• Business failure

Just as we need to breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide we also need to receive energy (money) and give energy (our services). It’s all about balance. In the bigger context of the material plane where we are living and growing a business, if you don’t make it about the money, you won’t have the capacity to truly serve.

What steps can you take (or have you already taken) to balance your intake and output of energy so you can truly serve? Share in the comments below.
